HIV infection and Pre and Post Exposure Prophylaxis

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) weakens the body’s natural defenses and, if untreated, may progress to AIDS. It is spread through sexual contact without protection, needle sharing, or transmission from mother to child during birth or breastfeeding. Because early warning signs—like fever, fatigue, sore throat, or skin rash—may be absent or subtle, testing is the only way to confirm infection. Preventive tools such as PrEP, a daily pill for those at higher risk, and PEP, an emergency treatment taken within 72 hours of exposure, are highly effective in reducing risk. For those who test positive, starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) quickly is essential to control the virus, maintain immune function, and prevent further spread. ART requires strict adherence to a customized regimen of medications. In addition, regular medical follow-up, safer sexual practices, and avoiding needle-sharing are critical parts of managing HIV. With the right care and support, people living with HIV can thrive and live long, healthy lives. Routine testing and community education remain vital for prevention and early detection.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Sexually transmitted infections are illnesses transmitted during sexual activity that can target the throat, mouth, or genital region. HPV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea are among the most prevalent. Infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea often go undetected due to lack of symptoms but can result in serious outcomes including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, or, on rare occasions, meningitis. Syphilis is progressive and, if not treated, may cause neurological harm such as dementia or stroke. HPV is connected with both genital warts and cancers affecting the cervix, anus, and throat. Although neurological involvement from STIs is uncommon, it can be very dangerous and must be addressed quickly. Key protective measures include HPV immunization, consistent use of protection during sex, and routine screenings. Early detection and effective treatment play a central role in avoiding long-term damage, and anyone with neurological red flags like visual changes, severe headaches, or neck stiffness should seek immediate medical evaluation.
